Dark sky basics

What is the Bortle scale?

A 1–9 rating of night-sky darkness. Bortle 1 is a pristine sky where the Milky Way casts shadows; Bortle 4–5 is typical rural-suburban transition; Bortle 8–9 is inner city where only the moon and planets survive. Most people have never seen better than Bortle 4. The jump to a 1 or 2 sky is genuinely life-list material.

What does 'International Dark Sky Park' mean?

A certification from DarkSky International (formerly IDA) requiring measured sky quality, protective lighting policies, and public astronomy programming. Certified parks are reliable bets: the designation guarantees both darkness and access.

How dark does the sky need to be for the Milky Way?

The Milky Way core becomes obvious around Bortle 4 and spectacular at Bortle 1–3. Timing matters too: you need the moon below ~30% illumination and the core above the horizon (roughly March–October for the bright core, best June–August).
